The Editorial Team was compelled to introduce a preliminary stage of selection, referred to as the Pre-evaluation phase. In this stage, submissions are assessed and either marked as Accepted to Review or Rejected.

Articles marked as Accepted to Review proceed to the peer review phase, while those marked as Rejected are immediately declined, and the authors are notified without receiving a formal evaluation report. Authors whose articles are accepted for review during the Pre-evaluation phase are not notified of this preliminary decision unless they proceed to the next stages.

The peer review process is conducted according to the double-blind review system, ensuring impartiality and academic rigour. The Editorial Board assigns two (occasionally three) qualified referees to evaluate the manuscript. These referees produce detailed reports assessing the submission based on the following criteria: originality, scholarly relevance and timeliness, methodological adequacy, coherence and consistency of the overall argument, theoretical and/or empirical grounding, clarity of expression, and appropriate use of language.

The Editorial Board carefully considers the referees’ reports, maintaining full discretion to request additional evaluations, disregard a review if necessary, or reach an independent decision. The Board also determines whether the referees’ reports will be shared with the authors.

Authors are informed of the outcome of the review process and, if applicable, receive specific recommendations for revision. If the article is not conditionally accepted, authors are expected to submit a revised version by the indicated deadline. The final version will be evaluated against the referees’ comments and recommendations. If the revised text is deemed not to meet the required standards for publication, the article will be rejected. The Editorial Board’s decision is final and not subject to appeal.

It is important to note that articles submitted for publication in the Varia section follow a different evaluation process from those submitted for inclusion in Thematic Issues. Additionally, the Journal reserves the right to exclude submissions that fall outside the scope of the Revista Portuguesa de Humanidades.

Given the rising quality of submissions and the financial constraints of the Journal, not all positively reviewed articles can be published. Consequently, a process of internal selection has been implemented. Articles with favourable peer reviews are ranked, and only the highest quality submissions are selected for publication. Therefore, a positive review does not guarantee publication. Authors whose positively reviewed articles are not accepted for publication will be duly informed of the decision.

Since 2014, the Revista Portuguesa de Humanidades has implemented a Pre-evaluation system for all articles submitted for publication.
